Google SGE (Search Generative Experience) Drops Links in AI-Generated Answers

In the preceding month, a report highlighted that Google had been in the process of testing three different citation and link formats within the AI-generated responses of the Google Search Generative Experience.

However now, Google has discontinued this test and eliminated the inclusion of links from these generated answers.

Britney Muller inquired, “Have the content/citation links in GSE been taken down?” These links have indeed been removed.

What Does It Mean?

The inclusion of links is integrated directly into the textual response. Until this point, Google had exclusively presented links within the cards located in the upper right corner of the AI-generated response.

Currently, this is in the experimental phase. Google is labeling it as the Search Generative Experience (SGE). 

Initially, access will be granted to individuals on a waitlist (you can register here). However, it’s regrettable that this is limited to the US at the moment. 

Nonetheless, it’s evident that this feature is destined to integrate into Google’s primary search service in the future.

The Problems Faced by Users

A lot of people have said that the Search Generative Experience has a problem. You can’t click on the words in the answer to see where the information comes from. 

But if there are links in these answers, it would be better because you could click on them. It’s cool that Google is trying this. I hope they make it work for more people soon.

Possible Drawbacks

It’s a fact that the AI snapshot is really big. This takes up a lot of space, which means the regular list of 10 search links gets pushed down even more. 

If your website is one of the 10 links for a search, there’s a chance that fewer people will click on it, leading to fewer visitors for that search.

However, the situation isn’t so simple.

If the way people search changes and more of them uses longer and more specific queries, it’s possible that search visitors will be divided among a wider variety of websites.

We can’t predict how much traffic you’ll receive when your site appears in the AI snapshot. We’re uncertain about the rate at which people will click on it. But it’s very possible that being featured there can bring in a significant amount of visitors.

There’s a chance that in order to succeed in the AI snapshot, you’ll require publishers to confirm what you’re stating and endorse your products. 

Achieving this involves the same concept that’s simple to express but exceedingly challenging to execute: create exceptional products and carry out an incredibly effective promotional effort.

Latest Updates on SGE 

In response to a Barry Schwartz query on Twitter, Google’s Search Liaison provided the following statement: 

“We’ve always had corroborating links. That hasn’t changed. The carousel that we launched with is still there; you can use the menu icon to open for links to appear inline….”
